I volunteered for two summers with A Place to Be, a therapeutic arts organization that fosters community, belonging, and hope through music therapy, performance, and expressive arts. While I had already considered a career in special education, this experience solidified my decision. During my time at APTB, I gained invaluable insights, particularly about the importance of empathy in the special education field. A topic I hope to expand upon here in the future.

APTB was thrilled to have Grace as a volunteer. She was a great addition to our camps! It was remarkable to see how quickly she was able to connect with our kids

I had the privilege to volunteer at Sunrise Day Camp-Long Island for two summers.  Sunrise is a daycamp, free of charge, for children with cancer and their siblings. At first glance, Sunrise looks like any other day camp, with a beautiful outdoor setting offering swimming, arts and crafts and ice cream socials.  However, behind the scenes, this camp is very specialized, requiring intensive training to successfully fullfil their mission. While the work was emotionally challenging, and my role was small, I was truly grateful to help bring a little bit of joy to these children and their families each day.

I met Grace when she was just 17 years old. She wanted to make a difference in the lives of children and so she came to the Sunrise Association wanting to become a counselor for our day camp on Long Island.

Joining a staff of selfless volunteers who daily must not only deal with the sadness and trauma of pediatric cancer but also create opportunities for joy and laughter appealed to Grace and she soared in her position. You could see the happiness and magic she brought to her campers and how those precious children also touched her heart.
